There are so many wonderful people who have made this trip possible; it's difficult to begin expressing my gratitude. I'll start with UNC-Chapel Hill, the incredible university that I will soon claim as my alma mater. I was fortunate to receive extensive financial support for my research from the Class of 1938 Endowment Committee (Class of 1938 Fellowship), Center for Global Initiatives and the Honors Program (Honors Thesis Research Grant), the Department of History (Boyatt Award in History) and the Stone Center (Undergraduate International Studies Fellowship). Without the support of these organizations, my trip would not be possible. This summer, the International Center for Transitional Justice (www.ictj.org) will be supporting my research in Cape Town - I will have official intern status, although I'll be doing my own research, and I will have work space at their office. I'm extremely grateful to the ICTJ - Cape Town and look forward to working with them.
I initially devised my research idea when I was taking a course called Morality and Law with Prof. Postema in the spring of my sophomore year (spring 2007). Without his teaching, my research interest would not have evolved from Holocaust studies to South Africa and the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)! Last summer, I did research on the South African TRC while living in Washington, DC, and my research was supported by the UNC Office for Undergraduate Research. Prof. Postema advised my research. And this past semester (spring 2008), I continued my research as independent study with the guidance of Prof. Lee and Prof. Postema. I am extraordinarily grateful for their support, advice and expertise.
Thanks to my family, for all of your love, support and kindness. Mom, Dad and Lizzie, I love you all so much!! Thank you for understanding the importance of this to me personally and to my educational journey. Thank you for believing in me. Nonny and Poppy, thank you for your undying support of everything I do.
And lastly, thanks to my wonderful friends for everything. Thanks for listening to me talk about my research incessantly and how excited I've been about going to South Africa, and for understanding when I wasn't able to do something because of working on my funding proposals. Thanks for your encouragement and emotional support. Thank you for being such amazing, incredible and awesome people. I would start thanking you all individually here, but that would take forever...so I'll thank you in person (as I prefer) and send hugs continuously from wherever I am.
